mirth, mockery and mayhem
Stopped in to check out Gallery 194’s current show, Mirth Mockery and Mayhem. The show crosses over into literary art with comics and cartoons – yeah, there’s a lot of pen and ink involved. Having read the graphic novel, V for Vendetta , not too long ago gave me a little more appreciation for the popular genre.
An artist in the Lapeer Art Association was also showing for the first time, and his offering was spectacular. Sandy Gorney’s photography is wonderful. Be sure to check it out in the back section of the gallery, along with the work of other association artists in their current show, It’s Alive. Go just to soak it in, but if you want some cool stuff for yourself, you can definitely get into it here without losing the shirt off your back.
Another excellent photographer, Dean Elkins, was on hand at the gallery. He gave a free workshop on Saturday about how to do transfers onto T-shirts. The selection of completed shirts was neat – the transfers came out so beautifully crisp! Elkins also has some awesome work in the show – be sure to get a look at his butterflies.
